Afonso’s Journey: From Refugee to Community and Band Leader
Afonso’s journey from Angola to Zambia as a refugee was marked by hardship, with his family struggling to make ends meet in the camp. He recalls his life before being selected by Pestalozzi International, where educational opportunities were scarce, and he was uncertain about his future. Joining Pestalozzi transformed his outlook, offering him stability, support, and an education that would open countless doors.
When he first arrived at Pestalozzi, Afonso was overwhelmed, speaking neither English nor any local languages. Yet, with support from his peers and teachers, he began excelling academically, earning top marks and eventually becoming Head Boy. His experience instilled in him not only academic discipline but also values of respect, empathy, and a drive to help others.
After graduating, Afonso became a coach with Edulution, working with children in the Mayukwayukwa camp and nearby schools to improve their math skills, with over 220 students now in the program. Embracing the principles of teamwork and community, Afonso strives to give back to his community. He sponsors five children’s education in the camp and works to uplift local youth through Zam-Ango Records, a music group he co-founded that promotes positive messages and provides alternatives for at-risk youth. His journey reflects Pestalozzi’s impact, empowering him with tools to build a brighter future for himself and his community.
