From Pestalozzi Scholar to Gold Star Coach with Edulution

Joseph Kumwenda’s Inspiring Journey with Pestalozzi Zambia

Joseph‘s Inspiring Journey with Pestalozzi Zambia

When Joseph Kumwenda joined the Pestalozzi Zambian Campus in 2009, he faced a future without formal education due to financial hardship. Selected by Pestalozzi International, his life changed, gaining access to quality education and a nurturing environment. Initially worried about the language barrier—only speaking his native language, Tumbuka—Joseph soon became fluent in English, forming bonds with peers and staff.

Reflecting on his most memorable experiences, Joseph recalls volunteering at Cheshire Homes for children with disabilities. Here, he learned about the Pestalozzi values of “Head, Heart, and Hands,” which left a lasting impact. Assisting with daily tasks and engaging children in games, he found fulfillment in serving others and embraced Pestalozzi's ethos.

After graduating, Joseph focused on supporting his family by helping them start basic farming, uplifting their standard of living. He also remained dedicated to Pestalozzi by running alumni networks, organizing updates, and fostering community. As a “Gold Star” coach with Edulution, he currently supports math education for young learners in rural Zambia through tablet technology, managing seven centers with 14 coaches and even training coaches in South Africa and Namibia.

Joseph’s ambitions continue to grow. In August, he will begin studying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Chalimbana University, self-funding his major in ICT and minor in biology. Grateful to Pestalozzi’s donors, Joseph expresses a heartfelt thanks, noting the transformative power of their support and encouraging their continued investment in children’s futures. His story embodies the impact of opportunity and education, and the enduring influence of Pestalozzi’s mission to empower youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.
