Empowering Young Women - Creating a future of confident leaders
A blog by Reena, Children’s Well-being Officer, Pestalozzi Nepal
Our holistic education is transformative for women
At Pestalozzi International, we believe that education is about nurturing confident, compassionate, and capable individuals who can create lasting change in their communities. That is why we actively support our children in developing not only their knowledge but also their skills in public speaking, sports, extracurricular activities, and leadership. For young women, in particular, this kind of holistic education is transformative, it builds the resilience, confidence, and courage they need to thrive in the world.
A dynamic learning environment boosts confidence
I have had the privilege of working at Pestalozzi for three years, and in that time, I have witnessed remarkable growth, not just in our children, but in our staff and colleagues as well. Pestalozzi provides a dynamic learning environment where everyone, from students to team members, has the opportunity to develop new skills. Children who were once too shy to speak up in front of their housemates are now confidently hosting events and winning public speaking awards. Women who work with Pestalozzi are encouraged to both learn and teach skills, creating a supportive, collaborative workplace where knowledge-sharing bridges gaps and strengthens our collective impact.
Leading by Example
When I think about young women thriving at Pestalozzi, one student from our fourth batch comes to mind. Despite being naturally shy, she stepped forward to host our Founders’ Day event, an experience that not only helped her overcome her fears but also set a powerful example for her peers. She has won our prestigious Heart Award year after year, a recognition given through peer votes, demonstrating the deep respect and admiration she has earned from her community. Her journey shows the power of education and encouragement. When young girls are given the right opportunities, they can break barriers and inspire those around them.

Why Investing in Young Women’s Leadership Matters
Educating and empowering young women is one of the most effective ways to build a fairer, more prosperous, and more sustainable world. When young women have access to education, they develop the skills, confidence, and critical thinking abilities to challenge societal norms and pursue their aspirations. They don’t just create better futures for themselves, they uplift their communities, contribute to economic growth, and advocate for inclusive policies that benefit everyone. Research by The World Bank shows that when women are educated, they make informed choices about health, finances, and family, helping to break the cycle of poverty for future generations. Having more women in leadership also brings diverse perspectives, stronger decision-making, and a more inclusive world where all voices are heard.
For our Pestalozzi children, who come from diverse districts and backgrounds, the impact of their education extends far beyond their own success. When they return to their communities, they share their knowledge and inspire others, creating a ripple effect of positive change. By investing in their education today, we are shaping leaders who will transform their societies for generations to come.
Encouraging Leadership: A Personal Mission
One of my key responsibilities at Pestalozzi is overseeing our Child Club activities, where I’ve had the privilege of guiding students, especially young women toward leadership roles. I have seen children who were once hesitant to participate grow into confident leaders, taking on roles like Vice President and Treasurer. All they need is encouragement, good role models, and mentors who believe in them. And mentorship doesn’t have to come from staff alone, our alumni and even their own peers can be powerful sources of inspiration and guidance.
One message I always share with young women is this: develop strong communication and leadership skills, but never forget to lift others as you rise.

Inspiration and Gratitude this International Women's Day
For me, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on the incredible contributions of the women around me, our staff, alumni, and team members, who continuously work to uplift our children and shape their futures.
A personal inspiration of mine is Malala Yousafzai, the renowned education activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Her relentless fight for girls’ education, despite facing immense challenges, truly demonstrates the power of resilience and courage. Malala’s story reminds me why our work at Pestalozzi is so vital: every young woman deserves the right to learn, grow, and lead.
Another figure who has profoundly influenced my journey at Pestalozzi is Jo Nair. From the moment of my interview, she has offered unwavering support and a wealth of knowledge. While I came to Pestalozzi with experience in child well-being, Jo’s mentorship and Pestalozzi’s teaching materials has helped me truly grasp our organisation’s philosophy and values.
Having Pestalozzi alumni like Sabita and Niruna in leadership positions has also been incredibly valuable, not just for our children, who see them as role models, but for non-alumni staff like myself. Their insights and experiences have helped deepen my understanding of the Pestalozzi approach, demonstrating how education translates into meaningful leadership and action.
Creating a Future of Confident, Empowered Leaders
At Pestalozzi Nepal, we create an environment where young women feel seen, heard, and valued. Where they are encouraged to lead, to speak up, and to believe in themselves. As we celebrate International Women's Day, I am filled with hope for the future, because I see firsthand the incredible potential in every young woman at Pestalozzi.
By investing in their education and leadership today, we are building a world where their voices shape the future, their actions inspire change, and their courage paves the way for the next generation.
